A bar owner suffered serious injuries after being stabbed by a naval officer who demanded free drinks, police in Nigeria said.

Lagos State Police said that incident occurred when the naval officer was presented with a N14,000 ($85) bill for drinking at the bar.

The violence broke out after the naval officer came to the bar with a group of his friends, drank several drinks and refused to pay, claiming that soldiers drink for free.

After the bar owner demanded payment, the naval officer became violent.

The naval officer struck the bartender and left him with a black eye. A security guard who tried to intervene, was stabbed in the head with a broken bottle.

Police officers who arrived at the scene, arrested the naval officer and his friends. However, they were released after the naval officer said he was drunk at the time of the attack and he promised to pay for the drinks.
