Man Who Raped & Murdered Irish Woman On Way Home Launches Stunning Bid For Early Release
A man who raped and murdered an Irish woman on her way home from a night out in Australia has shockingly launched a bid to be released earlier from his maximum-security jail.
Jill Meagher's killer Adrian Bayley is fighting a decision to refuse to fund an appeal aimed at reducing his current non-parole period of 43 years.
Lawyers claim the ruling is contrary to the Charter of Human Rights because it denied “the right of any person convicted of an offence to have the conviction and any sentence imposed reviewed by a higher court”.
Bayley, 44, is ineligible for release until 2058 when he would be 86 years old.
His non-parole period of 35 years was extended in June this year, when 18 years was added to his sentence for three rapes before he murdered Jill, from Co Louth. in September 2012.
Court orders were lifted which revealed that three separate trials were held in Melbourne's County Court and in each Bayley was found guilty of rape.
Two of the victims were prostitutes.
An 18-year-old prostitute was attacked in 2000, a 25-year-old sex worker was attacked in 2012, months before Jill Meagher was killed.
The third woman was a Dutch back-packer who was raped on her way home from a night out.
Bayley is appealing the sentence, arguing it is manifestly excess, as well as challenges the rape conviction.
But Victoria Legal Aid has refused to fund the appeals prompting Bayley to challenge the decision in the Supreme Court. Can you imagine?
