A bride and a widow at 16

Teenage cancer patient Omar Al Shaikh married his girlfriend days before he died

Omar Al Shaikh, 16, married his girlfriend Amie Cresswell, also 16, at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital just three days before he died after a battle with acute myeloid leukaemia. In March doctors told the teenager he had three months to find a suitable stem cell donor. But tragically, he ran out of time.
On June 14 specialists told Omar his final round of treatment hadn't worked and said he had just days to live. He immediately proposed to Amie, having sought the permission of their parents. Last Friday the couple tied the knot in hospital surround by their family, days before Omar passed away, having fulfilled his dying wish to become a married man.
