UPDATE-Police release Obesere

The State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, Lagos State has released popular musician, Obesere, who was accused of raping a 29-year-old student of the Polytechnic Ibadan.
Obesere, whose real name is Abass Akande, was invited for interrogation at the Department 14 of the SCID.
Obesere, popularly called Papa Tosibe, was alleged to have raped the victim at his Okota home.
Policemen at the SCID told our correspondent that the musician was invited to the SCID on Wednesday and released immediately.
A police source said, “We invited him based on the petition we received and he has written a statement. He said the woman was his girlfriend and she had come to visit him at home.
“Obesere is not a flight risk, so we have released him on bail. However, investigations will continue and if he is found culpable, he will be arrested.
“The woman in question came to Obesere’s house willingly and was not abducted. There are no eyewitnesses apart from Obesere and the victim, so we cannot conclude that it was rape, but we will leave no stone unturned.”
Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Damasus Ozoani, confirmed Obesere’s arrest to our correspondent on the telephone.
He said, “The victim, one Olanike Olaiya, said she was raped by Obesere and reported the matter at the Isolo Police Division.
“Obesere was invited for questioning, but he did not show up. The woman obtained a medical report indicating that she had been raped.
“Then the police obtained an arrest warrant and he was arrested and transferred to the SCID for further investigation.
“I don’t have much information on how far investigations have gone, but I will let you know once I have the information.”
