Captain Phillips star and Oscar nominee Barkhad Abdi has had an incredible rise to fame, yet despite his Best Supporting Actor nomination he is now broke and without work. Barkhad, a 28-year-old Somalian refugee from Minneapolis, won critical acclaim for his very first acting role, playing a Somali pirate in the movie in which he stars opposite Hollywood A lister Tom Hanks. He won the role of real-life pirate Abduwali Muse, who led the 2009 Maersk Alabama hijacking, in an open casting call and is now planning to move to LA next month in the hope of securing further acting roles and boosting his bank balance.
