Three people arrested and four gardai injured as violence erupts at Convention Centre

Clashes took place as protesters gathered to vent fury at Angela Merkel and other European leaders holding two-day event in Dublin

Four gardai were injured and three people arrested as angry scenes broke out tonight at the European People’s Party convention.
World leaders including German Chancellor Angela Merkel are at the two-day event in Dublin.
There were clashes between gardaĆ and a small number of anti-austerity protesters outside the venue.

It started as around 200 protesters who had marched from Liberty Hall joined a smaller group who had been at the centre for some time.
Protesters have hit out at the show put on for leaders while consumers are crippled with debt.

People Before Profit TD Richard Boyd Barrett said: “It really exposes our Taoiseach’s true loyalties and priorities.
“While claiming to represent the people of Ireland with EU leaders, he has been acting as an agent and dancing to the tune of Europe’s pro-austerity right. It is economic and political treachery.”
