Katie Taylor through to the final of European Games after tense win

Katie Taylor

Katie Taylor is through to the final of the European Games after a tough, tense semi-final win over Azerbaijan's Yana Alekseevna in the women's lightweight semi-finals.

In an extremely tight affair, Taylor won on a split decision having trailed going into the final.

Katie was up against a very capable boxer and a vocal home crowd and there was little in the way of early exchanges as both fighters tried to feel each other out.
In a very cagey first round, it was Alekseevna who edged it on the judges’ cards – 10-9, 10-9, 9-10.
But Katie came out all guns blazing in the second to land a couple of solid combinations and took the second round before Alekseevna regained her advantage with the judges awarding her the third somewhat controversially.
But the Irish Olympic gold medallist dominated the final round to seal her place on the final.
