A married man who was desperate for a few dollars, decided to fake his own kidnapping to extort money from his wife, police in Mexico said.
Mexico City Police said that they have arrested 36-year-old Eliot Garrido Guido, after being accused of uploading photos on Facebook that showed him tied up and injured.
Guido wrote a message to his wife demanding $460 in exchange for his freedom.
According to the police investigation, Guido was jealous of his wife, Constanza, 34, because she was earning more money than him working as a banker.
The husband enlisted the help of 42-year-old Martinez Reyes, who tied him to a chain in an abandoned house and smeared him with fake blood.
The two then uploaded images on Facebook, saying that the husband is being held captive somewhere in Playa del Carmen.
Constanza was also told that her husband was being tortured and that he will be killed if she does not pay the $460.
The horrified woman immediately contacted the police, who noticed that the messages were being sent from a location near the wife’s home and not from Playa del Carmen, which is about 900 miles away from Mexico City.
Police found the husband and his accomplice in the abandoned house and arrested them. If convicted, they both face up to 5 years in prison.
