GARDAI are waiting to interview a hospital patient about a bomb that destroyed a car in the middle of a city.
The bomb was placed either in or on top of a Volvo car parked at Long Lane, beside the former Meath Hospital in Dublin.
Gardai say a high grade explosive, normally used by subversives, was used. But they do not believe subversives were behind the attack and are blaming it on a crime gang, who have been involved in a range of "fundraising" activities.
The suspect was admitted to theMater Hospital with serious injuries to his face and upper body.
The man was taken to the hospital in a taxi and gardai have appealed to the driver to contact them.
The bomb appears to have exploded prematurely around 11pm on Sunday and caused major damage to the vehicle. The blast also damaged nearby cars.
Residents saw a man, who was bleeding from his wounds, attempting to run away from the scene.
Gardai said that a taxi driver collected a male passenger at the New Street/Clanbrassil Street junction, heading towards St Patrick's Cathedral.
The man is originally from Ballymun on the northside of the city.
The owner of the car lives in the south inner city.
Long Lane was cordoned off for several hours while a forensic check of the area was concluded.
