HE caused alarm among his superiors when he first appeared on the hit show, but real-life garda Kieran O'Reilly has returned to the set of Love/Hate.
The 35-year-old former drugs squad officer who plays fictional garda Ciaran Madden in the RTE phenomenon was reunited with his cast mates yesterday for the first time since filming of the fifth season kicked-off.
Production is taking place in various locations around Dublin, and O'Reilly was spotted in between scenes in a housing estate in the city, where his character was on the trail of Fran (Peter Coonan).
O'Reilly, who worked as an undercover drugs squad officer on the streets for six years, made his Love/Hate debut last October.
He is expected to enjoy a more prominent role in the next series of Stuart Carolan's award-winning drama, as the gardai move closer to bringing down kingpin Nidge and his gang.
It is understood that the detective, who was transferred out of the GardaNational Drugs Unit as a result of his role in the show, is taking annual leave to coincide with the days he is required on set.
O'Reilly was transferred to the Garda National Immigration Bureau after the fourth season aired, as senior management expressed concerns that his character's work was too close to his real-life day job.
