ENUGU—Enugu State police command said Sunday that it has arrested six persons for allegedly setting ablaze shrines belonging to some families at Umuaji Aguobuowa in Ezeagu Local Government Area of the state.

The suspects, who are members of a group known as Indigenous Christians of Umuaji, led by one Joseph Nnaeme, alias 404, were said to have in the early hours of January 7, 2014, burned down several ”sacred shrine houses” in the community.
The group reportedly claimed that the burnt shrines were responsible for the backwardness of the community and her indigenes, adding that they had the approval of the natives to destroy the shrines as part of spiritual cleansing of the area.
But while Christians in the area were celebrating the destruction of the shrines, four juju priests in-charge of the burnt shrines reported the arson to the police which led to the arrest of Nnaeme and members of his group.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the arrest of the suspects, said the command had commenced “full scale investigations into the burning down of different sacred shrine houses in the community as well as damaging of other valuable items at Umuaji Aguobuowa.”
He said members of the group allegedly went on rampage during their religious crusade in the community, adding that in the process, some shrines belonging to the community and other valuables were burnt down.
