Health bosses confirm that a baby died two days ago at the hospital which was branded "unsafe" in damning report
Another baby has died during labour at the under-fire Portlaoise Hospital.
Health bosses confirmed that a perinatal death took place two days ago on Saturday March 8th.
A spokesman for the Health Service Executive confirmed the death and said a incident management policy is being followed through.
The coroner has requested that a post-mortem examination take place and this is now in progress.
The HSE has offered its condolences to the family.
The hospital was the subject of a recent investigation following the death of four babies at the hospital.
After a damning report, Health Minister James Reilly said its maternity services were not safe.
The frightening inquiry demanded a management overhaul and called in the Coombe hospital bosses take over.
The report was initiated after a damning PrimeTime programme into the death of four babies at the Portlaoise Hospital over a six year period.
The damning RTE documentary month detailed how there were no problems before labour but died shortly after birth with reviews outlining failures by the hospital.
HIQA has now been called in to probe the hospital after the Department’s chief medical officer Dr Tony Holohan said there were “other serious adverse events” discovered.
He confirmed two weeks ago that there is “at least one more investigation” into perinatal deaths since the death of Mark Molloy in 2012.
