DUBLIN, Calif. (AP) — A Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer accidentally shot and killed a fellow officer Tuesday, authorities said.
The officers were conducting a probation search at a home in the East Bay city of Dublin when the shooting occurred just after 1 p.m., BART officials said.
The officer who was shot was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Alameda County Sheriff’s Sgt. J.D. Nelson confirmed that another BART officer was the shooter and that the shooting was accidental. The officers’ identity and other details are not being released at this time, BART Police Chief Kenton Rainey and BART General Manager Grace Crunican said in a joint statement.
“BART has been informed that one of our officers has died from wounds sustained during a shooting earlier today,” they said. “The entire BART organization is deeply saddened by this tragic event, and we ask the public to keep the officer’s family in its thoughts and prayers.”
The Dublin Police Department has taken over the investigation.
