Gardai on alert as criminal Ger Dundon is released from prison

Ger Dundon - one of four notorious criminals brothers - has been freed from prison.

Officers at Wheatfield Prison released Dundon (26) this evening at approximately 5pm, it is understood.
The Limerick criminal was granted early release with remission after he was imprisoned for five years for violent disorder as part of an extortion campaign against a Limerick night club promoter.
It is understood that Dundon was freed just over a day before he was due to be released for security reasons.
A dark coloured BMW X5 collected the Limerick criminal shortly around 5pm yesterday from the Dublinprison. His whereabouts are unknown this evening but officers in Limerick remain on alert as it is expected he will return to the city at some stage.
Three older brothers, Wayne, John and Dessie Dundon remain locked up and are serving varying sentences.
Ger Dundon emerges from prison to a vastly changed criminal landscape than the one he left when he was arrested at his home and locked up in 2010 while awaiting trial.
The gang's influence in the Limerick area of Ballinacurra-Weston has been dismantled by gardai.
The McCarthy-Dundon gang suffered a major schism in recent years as associates have turned on each other resulting in the jailing of various gang members.
In February 2011, Ger Dundon, who had 99 criminal convictions, was jailed for violent disorder at Sarsfield Avenue, Garryowen, Limerick on February 17, 2010.
The jailing arose following attempts by other members of the McCarthy-Dundon gang to collect €20,000 they believed they were owed by nightclub promoter Mark Heffernan.
Last year at the Court of Criminal Appeal, Ger lost an appeal against the five-year sentence.
His barrister Brendan Nix said at the hearing that after his release from prison, Ger Dundon intends going to England.
Mr Nix said the applicant was aware he had no future in Ireland and that his name was going to follow him “for the rest of his life”.
