Mexico's billion-dollar drug lord escapes prison
Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman (pictured being arrested in 2014, inset), head of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel, is on the run from Altiplano jail, 50 miles outside of Mexico City, security officials said.
A huge search operation is underway to find the drugs baron - known as Mexico's Osama bin Laden - with flights from nearby Toluca Airport cancelled as police try to hunt him down. He was last seen in the prison's shower area at 9pm last night. Guzman escaped another jail in 2001 with the help of guards, who assisted him in hiding in a laundry basket. His cartel has been heavily involved in the bloody drug war that has torn through parts of Mexico for the last decade, taking at least an estimated 100,000 lives.
