As a result of religious beliefs, some people consider pregnancy outside of marriage a serious offense, and they sometimes go the extra mile to kill the person who commits such an offense.
According to reports, after neighbors informed a 36-year-old Muslim woman in Turkey, Emine A., that her 17-year-old daughter, Meryem A., who worked at a grocery store, was three months pregnant, she flew into a rage, took a gun from her house, and confronted her daughter. She then reportedly shot her daughter five times.
Meryem was then transported to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Though the mother was hospitalized for a nervous breakdown, she has since been arrested and charged for the murder of her daughter.
The Turkish authorities reveal that violence against women is an ongoing and common problem in the country, though most attacks are instigated by men. Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
