66 people on a packed surfboard set new world record

World's largest surfboard

The surfers at Huntington Beach in California rode the world's biggest surfboard

It's hard enough for most people to just stand up on a surfboard let alone 66 doing it at the same time.
But with some of the world's top pro surfers and a board 42ft long, the Guinness World Record for the most people on a surfboard has been broken.

The group smashed the previous high of 47 people and notched up another record for the biggest surfboard along the way.
It is so big it had to be lifted into the sea with a huge forklift truck. And at 11ft wide, 16ins thick, it has 4ft fins, weighs 93st, and 400 gallons of resin and 420 bars of wax were used on it.
After years of planning the riders gathered at Huntington Beach in California, known as Surf City USA, for the attempt.
After being towed out, all the surfers had to stand on the board, riding a wave for at least 10 seconds to break the official record.
And after staying upright for 13 seconds, the riders, with ages ranging from 15 to 79, became record holders just before reaching the beach and the thousands who turned out to watch.
They were awarded the official Guinness record for surfing a few minutes later, though the second one for the biggest board will be verified at a later date.
The event, on International Surfing Day, wasn't just for pros, even the local congressman had a spot on the board.
