Kate, 33, was taken from her apartment at Kensington Palace to St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, west London, where she is due to give birth to the fourth in line to the throne in the private Lindo Wing.
The couple's nanny, Maria Borrallo, and Kate's parents, Michael and Carole Middleton, are understood to be looking after their son, Prince George, who turns two in July. The announcement was made at 6.34am via Twitter (inset left).
