Groom arrested after forgetting his bride’s name

A groom in the United Kingdom, was arrested after he did not remember the name of his bride.

The arrest unfolded just a few minutes before exchanging vows.

Authorities were alerted to the couple’s sham marriage and they were both arrested. Investigators said that this is one of the most blatant attempts to circumvent immigration laws.

48-year-old Zubair Khan of Pakistan, and 33-year-old Beata Szilagyi of Hungary, met with a registrar before the ceremony.

While being questioned, the groom forgot the bride’s name.

Zhan called his uncle who “set them up,” and asked him about the name of the woman. That is when the registrar called immigration officials, who arrested both immigrants.

The sham marriage was designed to allow Khan to remain in the United Kingdom, authorities said. His wish was granted, but not in the way he expected.

This week, Khan was sentenced to 20 months in prison. Szilagyi, who is a single mother to a toddler, was sentenced to 17 months in prison. Both pleaded guilty to conspiring to defraud immigration officials.

Khan’s uncle who paid Szilagyi about $3,000 for the sham marriage, was sentenced to 20 months in prison.
