Woman is stabbed to death while working in food store

A YOUNG worker was stabbed to death in a shop in Kilkenny city last night.

It is understood the 28-year-old woman was attacked and stabbed several times in the chest as she was about to lock up the nutritional food store 'Holland and Barrett' at Market Cross Shopping Centre for the night.

A man in his 20s was arrested a short time later in Kilkenny city and was held for questioning in relation to the incident at Kilkenny GardaStation. He is still being questioned this morning.

Gardai have confirmed that they are treating the death as a murder investigation.
"A female in her late 20s received serious stab wounds during the incident and was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny," a garda spokesman said.
"She was pronounced dead a short time later.
"A 27 year old male has been arrested in connection with this incident and is currently detained at Kilkenny Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 – Criminal Justice Act 1984.
"The scene is preserved pending a Garda technical and forensic examination."
Onlookers described hearing the man shouting at the shop worker before the attack. The man is understood to have entered the shop shortly after 8.30pm.
Gardai are investigating if the attacker had known the young woman.
Paramedics worked on her at the scene before she was rushed to St Luke’s Hospital by ambulance where she was pronounced dead.
The young woman is from the Kilkenny city area.
A post mortem is due to be carried out today.
It is understood that CCTV footage will also be examined today.
