Turkey erupts in protest over death of 274 coal miners

Tensions were high as hundreds of relatives and miners jostled outside the coal mine waiting for news, countered by a heavy police presence

Scores of graves were being dug (left) today in Soma, the town where hundreds of miners were caught up in an underground explosion and fire in a coal mine.
Already 274 are confirmed dead, with 450 rescued. Hopes were fading for those still trapped underground but in the town and across the country anger spilled over into protests (bottom right), many of which were tackled by the police with tear gas and baton rounds, including these demonstrations in Ankara. he blast at the coal mine in Soma, around 120km (75 miles) northeast of the Aegean coastal city of Izmir, happened during a change in shifts on Tuesday. 'We are worried that the death toll will rise... I have to say that our hopes are dimming in terms of the rescue efforts,' Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said at the scene. Some of those brought to the surface have been badly injured (bottom right) and thousands of family members are still holding vigil at the pit in the hope of loved ones being found alive.
