Brazil football coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has been made the subject of a criminal investigation.
It was reported in Brazil and the Netherlands that Scolari is suspected of tax evasion. He has denied any wrongdoing.
Officials will not say what the inquiry is about as investigations in Portugal fall under the country's judicial secrecy law.
The Portuguese attorney general's office said the Department for Criminal Investigation and Prosecution has opened an inquiry into Scolari, but it provided no further details.
The Brazilian led Portugal's national team from 2003 to 2008. He will coach the Brazilian national team at the World Cup this summer.
