Karyn Washington: For Brown Girls Creator Reportedly Commits Suicide

Karyn Washington
Karyn Washington, the popular creator of For Brown Girls, a movement to uplift and empower brown-hued Black women, has died from an apparent suicide.

She was 22-years-old.
For Brown Girls‘ mission statement is as follows:
FBG was created to celebrate the beauty of dark skin while combatting colorism and promoting self love! FBG was created to celebrate darker shades of brown- to encourage those struggling with accepting having a darker skin complexion to love and embrace the skin they are in. However, women of all shades may take away from FBG the universal and essential message of self love and acceptance.
Washington also helmed of the #DarkSkinRedLip project. With the purpose of “breaking barriers and building confidence,” DSRL set out to shatter the myth perpetuated by rapper ASAP Rocky that dark-skinned women do not look beautiful wearing bright colors, particularly red lipstick.
Brown allegedly suffered with mental illness, including depression and social media reaction to her death was swift.
