The mother and stepfather of a baby girl who died after being mauled by a 'vicious and terrifying' pet dog have been arrested.
Ava-Jayne Corless, aged 11 months, was rushed to hospital at around 11pm yesterday from a house in Blackburn, Lancashire.
Doctors at Royal Blackburn Hospital were unable to save the girl, and she died from the injuries sustained in the attack.
The victim's 20-year-old mother and her partner, 26, were arrested by police and are currently being questioned on suspicion of child neglect.
Neighbours reported seeing police struggle to enter the house on Emily Street as the cross-breed dog raged out of control.
A specialist team later managed to detain the animal and took it away as part of the investigation.
No one else was injured by the dog during the attack.
The dog, described by neighbours as a 'menace', apparently attacked and killed a cat in the area last year, prompting questions as to why it was not brought under control earlier.
