Jobseekers face 'surprise' sign-ons in bid to cut fraud

There is a fresh bid to clamp down on welfare fraud, with the Department of Social Protection changing how people sign on as part of the effort.

Some jobseekers will be put on a "selective signing" list, meaning they can be called at short notice to sign on, rather than doing it monthly.
It is hoped the move will also cut down on those working cash-in-hand jobs or nixers while also claiming the dole.
Letters have already been issued to some jobseekers, telling them they are being placed on the "selective signing" list.
Those who miss the short-notice appointments may have their payments delayed the following week.
