A Georgia man, terrified that his case was going south at a record pace, decided to hightail it during a restroom trip while court was in recess. He never returned.
50-year-old Saladin Ghani was on trial and facing 20 years in prison on charges of identity fraud and theft after his neighbor accused him of stealing $7,000.
The judge decided to go ahead with the case when neither Mr. Ghan’s attorney nor numerous deputies could locate him. Just moments after going back in session, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty.
He’d panicked and gone to a friend’s house just four miles from the courthouse, he later told NY Daily News.
He didn’t know he was a free man until he saw his picture plastered all over network news.
Surprisingly, no warrants were issued for his arrest.
Culled
