Wimbledon ball boy and a soldier guarding Prince Charles collapse in 98F heat
Temperatures hit a sweltering 36.7C (98F) at London Heathrow Airport by 3.30pm, making it the warmest day in Britain for 12 years. But there was concern among health officials that the young children, pregnant women and the elderly could be at risk from the heatwave.
Public Health England told people to stay out of the sun when it was at its fiercest in the afternoon, as the country became hotter than Barcelona and Athens. Play had to be stopped at Wimbledon in south-west London (centre) after a ball boy fainted in the heat, while other spectators were also spotted being treated by paramedics. Elsewhere, a soldier also fainted as he guarded the Prince of Wales paying tribute to Second World War heroes who helped prepare for D-Day. The soldier (left), from the Royal Artillery based at Thorney Island, fell onto the shingle beach on Hayling Island seafront in Hampshire. Meanwhile there was misery for motorists battling the heat as a stretch of the M1 in Derbyshire was closed after an HGV lorry carrying explosives caught fire (top right). And Fiona Parker held a thermometer at Leicester Square station reading 36.9C as commuters complained about the stifling conditions (bottom right).
