A woman was arrested, charged and convicted of fraud after giving away her baby to her gay friend while telling her lover that she had an abortion, prosecutors in Scotland said.
Now, 29-year-old Vikki Gilmore of Perth, was sentenced to serve 3 years in prison after keeping the father of her 3-year-old girl out of the child's life.
The woman’s gay friend, 35-year-old Christopher Yates of Glasgow, was also sentenced to serve 3 years in jail. The girl’s father, 34-year-old Steven North, was extremely happy with the jail sentences imposed on the two.
A psychiatrist testified that the mother’s behavior likely caused lasting psychological damage and trauma to the child.
According to the police investigation, Gilmore and Yates conspired to defraud the biological father of the child by telling him that the pregnancy was terminated.
Gilmore claimed that she had sex with her gay friend and thought that the baby was his. Yates testified that he believed Gilmore’s story that the baby was his.
However, the jury did not believe their story and found them guilty of fraud.
