The canopy and facade of the Stillorgan Shopping Centre, which opened in 1966, will be replaced to bring it up to modern standards.
Owners Kennedy Wilson said the retail outlet had never undergone a major upgrade, and it had sought planning permission for a refurbishment project.
The application is aimed at "transforming the current customer experience" by upgrading and improving the canopy and facade while retaining the "local community atmosphere" that prevails.
A new glazed canopy over the entire scheme to replace the existing street-level canopy system is proposed. An upgrade of the facade is also mooted, along with improvements to the car park.
Home to 50 retailers including Tesco and Dunnes Stores, the centre will remain open during the works, whose cost is not being disclosed.
"We are excited about the significant improvements to the customer experience that this proposal would deliver," said spokesman Peter Collins.
