Anne Kirkbride, 60, dies after 43 years on Coronation Street
Coronation Street actress Anne Kirkbride - one of the nation's best-loved and longest-serving soap stars - died yesterday after a short illness. She was aged 60.
The actress, who played Deirdre Barlow for 43 years, appeared in 1,439 episodes of the show. Tonight her fellow stars lined up to pay tribute, describing her as 'loving and vibrant'. It was revealed in September that Miss Kirkbride, famous for her large spectacles and her husky voice - a result of her own chain smoking - was to take an extended break from the soap.
