A 27-year-old man who lived in a teenage girl’s wardrobe for five days without her parents’ knowledge and sexually assaulted her has been arrested, police say.
Jarred Workman, from North Carolina, was discovered by the 14-year-old’s shocked mother when she went to put some clothes away.
He has been charged with a string of sex offences, including 11 counts of statutory rape and five counts of statutory sex offence.
Workman and the girl had been speaking online for a month before they met in person, with the girl inviting him to her parents’ home in Iredell County in April.
‘I was sorta shocked more than anything. I asked him who he was and he said Jarred Workman and he was 19,’ the girl’s mother, who did not want to be identified, told WSOCTV.
‘I’m uncomfortable in my own home. I’m scared. I can’t sleep at night
‘The internet has just ruined that poor girl. She was just taken advantage of.’
Workman ran off when he was discovered but left his wallet and mobile phone behind. He handed himself into police after more than two weeks on the run.
‘Just the fact that he would be that brazen,’ said Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Bill Hamby.
‘To come up here and meet a girl online and then stay in her residence not knowing what her parents are or what they are about.’
Workman also faces charges in another sex assault case.
