Gil Voigt (pictured left), an Ohio teacher, has been placed on the unemployment line after making a racially charged comment about President Barack Obama to a student, according to USA Today.
In December, Voight reportedly told a Black student in December who wanted to follow in Obama’s footsteps that “we do not need another Black president.”
A labor hearing sealed Voigt’s fate last Thursday. “There is good and just cause to terminate the teaching contract,” a state referee commented in a letter to the Fairfield Board of Education.
Voigt has not commented on his termination; however, he previously said he was misquoted by the student. He claims he actually said, “I think we can’t afford another president like Obama, whether he’s Black or White.”
But a look into Voigt’s file shows he was accused in 2008 of referring to a student as an “African-American Rudolph” while aiming a laser pointer at him. Last year, he allegedly called another student “stupid” and others “gay” and failed to use the adopted school curriculum, the latter of which he received a verbal reprimand.
Fairfield Superintendent Paul Otten also recommended that the board end the teacher’s employment contract.
“The district felt that the evidence was sufficient to support the termination of Mr. Voigt’s employment. The referee recommended such termination, and the board has concurred,” Otten said in a statement.
Ohio’s Department Of Education will hold an individual investigation in to Voigt’s firing, which will decide whether Voigt should have his teaching license limited, revoked from one day to five years, or revoked completely.
Voigt has 30 days to appeal the referee’s decision.
