Kevin Canty (pictured above), a retired New York City police officer, stands accused of fatally shooting his wife, Jessica Mera (pictured below), 40, ten times in front of their two children on Saturday morning after reportedly accusing her of sleeping with another police officer.
According to the New York Daily News, Canty, who has confessed to the crime and is facing charges of second-degree murder and criminal use of a firearm, is also reportedly sorry for the slaying, claiming jealousy drove him to it.
The 43-year-old man, who admits to still loving his wife, allegedly told a detective who drove him to a nearby precinct for questioning that he used a 9-mm pistol to take Mera’s life.
Canty retired from the police force only last year after suffering a torn rotator cuff while leading a self-defense class at the police academy. According to the prosecutor, Canty was drunk when he was cuffed after the shooting and was discovered not far from his Ozone Park home. Police speculate Canty was trying to steal a car but was apprehended before he could do so. When Canty was arrested, he reportedly was still in possession of the firearm that allegedly killed his wife and there were six bullets left in the gun’s chamber.
According to the New York Daily News, Canty, whom neighbors describe as “quiet,” ran after his children when they bolted out of their home after witnessing the alleged shooting. They ran down the street and into a nearby store yelling “Daddy shot mommy!”
Neighbor Daniel Farrell told the New York Daily News that he had smelled liquor on Canty’s breath various times in the past. Farrell also told the Daily News that Mera had recently banged on the door of their home saying that Canty had been drinking excessively and threatening to kill her. Another unnamed neighbor told the paper that Canty and Mera argued excessively but they refused to interfere, stating, “We tried to block it out, because it’s a common thing.”
If convicted of the shooting, Canty faces 25 years to life in prison.
