Teachers vote for industrial action over plans to scrap the Junior Cert

Overwhelming number of 27,000 ASTI and TUI members claim the move would ruin educational standards

Furious teachers have voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action over proposed changes to the Junior Cert.
Almost 90% of furious teachers from the unions backed some sort of action after Education Minister Ruairi Quinn said he would not change his plans on reform.
The row is over the axing of the Junior Cert in favour of continuous assessment where students will be marked over the work they complete over the course of three years.
But many teachers claim the proposed system is watering down education and the children on the new system would suffer as a result.
ASTI General Secretary Pat King said: “Teachers have always been willing to modernise the Junior Certificate and Junior Cycle education.
“However, they are not prepared to implement educationally unsound proposals which are being unilaterally imposed on them. Teachers believe the Minister’s proposals will undermine education standards.
“They are demanding genuine consultation on their concerns. The Minister has an opportunity to make sure this happens before industrial action begins to impact on schools.”
