Local Referee Kwame Andoh Kyei dies in Ghana

Referee Kyei Andoh

Accra – Police in Ghana have launced an investigation into the death of a football linesman who was reportedly assaulted after a disputed decision in a domestic league match, a spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Kwame Andoh Kyei, who died on Friday, was assistant referee in a second division match in the western town of Bordie March 2.
Ghana Football Association spokesman Ibrahim Sannie Daara said Kyei was assaulted after a controversial decision but did not immediately seek medical attention.
Olivia Adiku, western region police spokeswoman, said investigators were waiting for the details of an autopsy which could come this week.
It was not yet clear if Kyei died from injuries sustained during the match, she added.
“As of now, we wouldn't be able to even say whether it's the home team that attacked him or the away team,” Daara told AFP.
Police are typically on hand to provide security at professional matches in the western region but were not present on March 2
because the clubs “didn't request for any particular security”, according to Adiku.
She said football related violence is extremely rare in the area.
