Man slapped, punched and threw a 10-month-old baby

Larry Connors

A man who slapped, punched and threw a 10-month-old baby in a “truly horrific” case of child cruelty has had his three-year sentence increased to five years.

In February 2012, 21-year-old Larry Connors was caged at Ennis Circuit Criminal Court after pleading guilty to child cruelty on dates between 15 December 2010 and 3 January the following year.
The baby was taken to the Midwestern Regional Hospital in Limerick with injuries that included fractures to his right and left arms, a dislocated right elbow, multiple bruising to his body, a burn mark to his right calf and bleeding to his brain, the court heard at the time.
And even though the child is recovering, he needs speech therapy because of a tear to his mouth.
Its mother described in horrific detail how Connors slapped, pinched, punched and threw her baby around the apartment where she lived.
She said the brute abused the helpless child for three weeks but claimed she was powerless to stop him.
Judge Carroll Moran jailed Connors for three years after reading a medical report which stated that the baby’s injuries were severe and significant and would have caused extreme pain at the time.
But following an appeal by the Director of Public Prosecutions on the grounds that the sentence was too lenient, it was today hiked to five years
