THE gun victim discovered near Tallaght was understood to have been wearing a bullet proof vest.
Gardai are expected to launch a murder investigation after making the discovery late last night.

Detectives, on what gardai say was a routine patrol, gave chase to a car which had been acting suspiciously on Fox Hill Lane near Tallaght in south county Dublin.

The car managed to get away but when gardai returned to the small country lane they found the body of a man in his early 30s. The victim had sustained gun shot wounds to the neck and other injuries to his upper body.

One resident in the area close to where the man's body was found told of his shock this morning to the Irish Independent.

"I've been here for years and am in complete shock now," Paul Doyle told the Irish Independent.

"It's scary when this type of thing happens on your doorstep because you hear about these things and even in Tallaght there has been incidents but not this far out. "

Other residents told of hearing the garda helicopter late last night which was understood to have been used in the search for the car.

A crime scene was set up and the state pathologist's office was also called to the scene.
