A man and a woman from the Henan province of eastern China, identified as Ding and Zhao, were arrested after employees of a hotel found a newborn baby girl crying inside a suitcase on July 26th.
The employees suspected the pair when they saw the man loitering suspiciously in the hotel lobby while he stood next to a woman. He was trying to smuggle the two-day-old baby into the hotel so the woman who accompanied him could adopt the child. It has since been established that the man is the child’s father.
The staff at the hotel called the police after they found the infant hidden beneath some clothes in the father’s luggage. The pair was arrested and the baby was taken to the hospital where it was confirmed that she was healthy.
According to police, the child’s parents live in a poor rural village and were unable to raise the child, especially since the girl’s mother is mentally disabled. So it is believed that Ding and Zhao were discussing the specifics of an adoption. However, police are still investigating the case.
