Former Premier League footballers 'conned' out of savings in £50m UAE apartments scam

Former Premier League footballers among dozens of Brits 'conned' out of savings

Ex-Liverpool star David Thompson (right) lost almost £300,000 after handing over cash for luxury seaview apartments in La Hoya Bay, UAE, to 'shyster' developer Frank Khoie (inset). MailOnline understands that two other top-flight players were also caught up in the scandal, which saw 700 investors - including dozens of ordinary Britons - lose £50million in deposits.
Artists impressions (left) show how people were scammed into putting money into the planned luxury development on the man-made island of Al Margan on UAE's northern coats. Thompson, 37, who was twice selected for the England squad, put hundreds of thousands of pounds into the development, but no building has taken place since 2009 and there is no word on any money being returned to investors. He told MailOnline he was 'completely scammed', adding: 'It started out as the perfect investment but after I put down the money everything went into a hole. I haven't heard anything since.'
