Haunting portraits of New Zealand's Mighty Mongrel Mob biker gang
Wellington born artist Jono Rotman has spent nearly eight years documenting the Mighty Mongrel Mob, New Zealand's largest and most notorious gang.
The chilling images of the group, who are infamous for their bloody clashes with rival gangs like Black Power, offer a window into an underworld which usually operates in the shadows. After meeting a gang liaison officer who put him in contact with the mob, Rotman visited the homes of hundreds of members to shoot over 200 portraits. Like most gangs, the Mob, who formed in Wellington and Hawkes Bay in the 1960s, have a stringent code against outsiders, preferring to operate in the shadows-which makes the chilling snapshots that much more spectacular.
