BREAKING NEWS: Former Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy dies at his home in Scotland aged 55

Charles Kennedy, former Liberal Democrat leader, dies at his home aged 55

The Scottish ex-MP's death was not believed to be suspicious and the cause of death has yet to be confirmed. Mr Kennedy lost his seat in the Ross, Skye and Lochaber constituency to the SNP's Ian Blackford in last month's general election.
He had for years battled a problem with alcohol and friends said that he had been 'heartbroken' not to be re-elected as an MP and feared for his safety without the 'support' of Parliament. In 2010 he divorced with wife of eight years Sarah (pictured left), with whom he had a 10-year-old son. Mr Kennedy is pictured centre on April 27th in East Dumbartonshire during the election campaign. The shock news prompted a wave of tributes this morning from across the political divide.
