State of emergency declared after 15 officers are injured, shops looted and patrol cars set ablaze

Baltimore police and Freddie Gray rioters turn city into 'absolute war zone'

A state of emergency has been declared in Baltimore as the city transforms into 'an absolute war zone' just hours after the funeral of 25-year-old Freddie Gray, who after suffering a spinal cord injury in police custody.
More than 1,000 police officers and the Maryland National Guard arrived in the city and President Obama was briefed on the situation as the violence escalated. Fifteen police officers were injured, many with broken bones, and at least one appeared 'unresponsive'. One officer was carried to safety after a rock was thrown on his head. Buildings, including a CVS pharmacy, were on fire. Three of the city's most violent and dangerous gangs - Black Guerrilla Family, Crips and Blood - announced an unprecedented alliance to 'take out' law enforcement officers. But in an apparent show of solidarity, gang members have been seen linking arms with Nation Of Islam leaders, calling for calm.
