More than 900 feared dead when migrants capsize their packed fishing boat



Politicians and charities have attacked the British government and other EU states for supporting Italy's controversial decision to stop search and rescue operations last year, after more than 900 people are feared dead when a smuggler boat carrying migrants capsized in the Mediterranean sea overnight.
The incident has been described as the most catastrophic maritime tragedy since World War II. Thousands of people have tried to smuggle into Europe, a crisis described by the Italian Prime Minister as a 'new slave trade' and while some reach the shores safely - including the child pictured being cradled by a rescue worker in a Sicilian harbour - many have now died attempting the perilous crossing.
