After months of waiting, it was announced last night that a US grand jury had decided that Officer Darren Wilson (bottom left) would not face trial for shooting 18-year-old Michael Brown (top left) on August 9.
The news sparked a wave of violent protest in the Missouri town, where tensions had been rising through the day. Police fired tear gas to disperse protesters, while buildings and police cars were set alight. There was also widespread looting, despite pleas from President Obama for people to remain calm and respect the jury's decision.
