14-year-old child-bride faces death penalty for killing 35-year-old husband

Wasila speaks with an unidentified defence counsel outside the courtroom during a break at her trial at Kano State High Court in the village of Gezawa

Nigerian Wasila Tasi'u, 14, pictured left with a member of her defence counsel outside Kano State High Court in the village of Gezawa, is standing trial for the murder of her husband Umar Sani, 35.
Prosecutors allege she laced a meal she had prepared for a post-wedding celebration with rat poison - which is said to have killed three others. The reported deaths have been combined into one murder charge. But the trial has angered activists who claim a girl who married a man more than 20 years her senior should be treated as a victim. The case was opened yesterday with testimony from a seven-year-old child who says she was given money and sent to buy the poison on the same day Sani died.
