Paul Wilcox, in his 50s, (pictured centre with his wife) was bitten on the leg by the shark at the southern end of Main beach in Byron Bay on the north coast of New South Wales, according to witnesses.
Several swimmers witnessed the attack, including one man who tried in vain to pull the victim away from the shark. A doctor performed CPR on the victim but he could not be saved, the spokeswoman said. A large shark (left) was spotted swimming off Clarkes Beach by television news crews a short time later.
