For the past 16 years David and Mary Harper (right) from Sussex and Gilda (left) from Frankfurt have enjoyed a remarkable closeness, sharing outings, holidays and even a three-man bicycle with matching gear.
It is all the more incredible when you consider its origins; after 20 years of marriage when he was working away from home in Germany in 1998, Gilda was David's mistress. Now Mary claims making friends with her husband's former lover has helped her marriage.
