Michael D Higgins' four-day trip is a sign that relations between the two countries have been transformed since the Queen's historic visit to Dublin in 2011.
The Irish President started with a meeting with the Prince of Wales and his wife at the Irish embassy in central London. Tonight he will be a guest at the Queen's banquet at Windsor Castle, which will be controversially attended by Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness, a former IRA commander.
