THE family of a young man who was fatally stabbed in an unprovoked house-party attack have spoken of their heartbreak at the killing.
Michael O'Dwyer (25) died after a large kitchen knife was plunged into his chest. His family described him as "a quiet fella who wouldn't hurt a fly."
Mr O'Dwyer died after the attack at a rented house in Seafield, Tramore, Co Waterford, shortly after 11.30pm on Thursday.
The young man was sitting on the stairs chatting about music to a friend when, without words being exchanged, another man stabbed him in the chest with the large kitchen knife.
He was found by gardai critically injured at the house and was pronounced dead shortly after being admitted to Waterford Regional Hospital. A garda source confirmed that the assault on Mr O'Dwyer was totally unprovoked.
A 32-year-old man is due before a special sitting of Waterford District Court later today charged over the death
The man appearing in court today, who was believed to have been with the victim earlier on the day he died, was arrested in the vicinity of the property shortly after gardaí arrived.
Mr O'Dwyer's uncle, PJ, said: "We are absolutely devastated. Michael was a lovely young fella. He was very quiet and wouldn't hurt a fly."
A post-mortem was being carried out last night by State Pathologist Marie Cassidy.
