Gangland leader Declan 'Whacker' Duffy arrested in Dublin

Former INLA leader Declan 'Whacker' Duffy has been arrested by gardai.

Duffy's arrest took place just before midday.

He is now being detained in Clontarf Garda Station.

It's understood he was arrested in connection to allegations of extortion.

Duffy's arrest comes just three days after the Herald revealed that Duffy and Dessie 'Border Fox' O'Hare were among a group of men involved in two incidents.

Rivers Government renames state polytechnic after Ken Saro Wiwa

Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike has renamed the Rivers state Polytechnic after late author and environmental rights activist, late Ken Saro-Wiwa. In a statement released yesterday July 9th and signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Opunabo Inko-Tariah, Governor Wike said the school is being re-named after the late activist because of his achievements and legacies 

Couple escaped death when their Renault EXPLODED

A couple who pulled over when a warning light flashed on their car dashboard escaped death by just 30 seconds, when their car exploded.

David Lewis, 48, and Melanie Keeling, 51, thought it was just a minor technical problem when the 'electrical fault' light showed on the dashboard of their Renault Megane Scenic. 

But seconds after they stopped in a nearby car park, thick black smoke began pouring from the engine shortly before the car burst into flames and exploded, scattering broken glass.

The blaze also destroyed two neighbouring cars, and damaged a number of other vehicles nearby. 

Homeless boy, 9, who does his homework by the light of a McDonalds restaurant

The inspiring picture of him doing his homework on the street using a makeshift wooden desk and the dim light from a McDonald's restaurant touched the hearts of millions.

He may be only nine years old, but the determination by Daniel Cabrera to use education to drag himself out of poverty in the Philippines struck the medical student who stopped to take his picture, which was shared around the world.

Daniel's commitment is all the more remarkable when it is revealed that he is homeless and lives in a shack around the back of a cafe where his mother works after their home was burned down in a fire five years ago.
